As a member of the Judiciary Committee in the Nebraska State Legislature, Senator McKinney has been at the forefront of addressing issues within the state's criminal justice system. He has actively visited multiple institutions to gain firsthand knowledge of the challenges within our state's corrections facilities. Additionally, he served on the Crime and Justice Institute task force to study these issues and develop a plan to address them.
Criminal justice reform is a matter of great importance to Senator McKinney, and throughout the remainder of his term, he will continue to be a strong advocate for change. In the most recent legislative session, Senator McKinney played a significant role in passing LB50, a bill that brings much-needed changes to our criminal justice system. These changes include:
Geriatric Parole.
A mandatory parole window at age 80%.
The establishment of a sentencing task force.
The introduction of a pilot program for technical parole violation housing.
Implementation of a probation incentivization program.
These reforms reflect Senator McKinney's commitment to improving the criminal justice system in Nebraska and creating a fairer, more just environment for all citizens.
