WHO IS SENATOR TERRELL MCKINNEY? Senator McKinney was born and raised in Omaha, but District 11 has always been my home. He has five siblings, consisting of two brothers and three sisters. His most important role is that of a father to his thirteen-year-old daughter, Sana'a. Beyond his legislative responsibilities, he remains deeply involved in the community. He regularly participates in community events and meetings, coaches wrestling at Omaha North Magnet High School, and is actively working towards completing his law degree at Creighton University.
WHY DID HE RUN? Senator McKinney ran to represent District 11 in the Nebraska State Legislature because, as a young Black man, he believed he couldn't afford to wait for change or sit out another election. As Frederick Douglass once wisely stated, "Power concedes nothing without struggle." District 11, situated in Historic North Omaha, grapples with longstanding issues that have persisted since his childhood. His unwavering commitment is to be one with our community, ensuring that the voices of our community are brought with him to Lincoln. He recognizes that our state legislature needs more young voices, particularly from underserved communities, to boldly address the 21st-century challenges we face.
